Abstract

This exercise is my attempt at abstract, perhaps not a forte, definitely not my genre. I envisioned a patchwork of letters, no meaning to the letters, just an aesthetic different look on each to create a single piece. Abstract is a challenge for me. As I study the masters of the modern art movement, I'm not sure that they loved their pieces, especially when they were eliciting a response that was more about shock value. If you are trying to say something with your art and you are challenging long held traditions about how art should look, do you have to like it? I'm not sure, I don't think I do.

  1. A couple heroes of mine, Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp, were at the fore-front of a movement called Dadaism that was all about the senselessness of art. Marcel Duchamp was most infamous for signing a urinal and calling it "art." If you're challenged by the modern/post-modern movement, it is something you should look into. I think a big thing to understand is that it was reflecting what was going on at the time. These movements came along between the two Great Wars, and everyone was scared with the changing world. That's the time when we saw a transition from strict and formally realistic landscapes and photographs to these bizarre, sometimes macabre-ly twisted scenes. People didn't understand the world, thought it was falling to pieces. Someone once said that art is the barometer of society, and reflects what's going on in the collective conscience. I think that WHEN a movement originated is important in understanding WHY it's especially "Artistic" or meritorious.

  2. Reminiscent of the pop art movement in the late 1950s. Perhaps a bit Roy Lichtenstein-esque and poster art-like. Very interesting.
